We are a highly interdisciplinary research team performing our activities at the Department of Pharmacy, University of Copenhagen.
We use tools drawn from physics and chemistry to explore the complexity of nano- and micro-scale biological systems, with proteins and peptides at the heart of our work. We study the physics laws that govern their stability, their self-assembly, and their interactions with biological interfaces. This fundamental understanding translates into high-impact applications — advanced materials for nanomedicine and drug delivery, safer protein-based drug formulations, and new insight into the origins of protein-related neurodegenerative diseases.
To achieve our goals, we use theoretical frameworks in combination with experiments mainly based on UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray and neutron scattering, and optical and electron microscopies. We apply machine learning methods for the analysis of complex spectroscopic data, and use molecular simulations to interpret X-ray and neutron scattering data. In addition, we design and produce biomaterials for wound healing and drug delivery using electrospinning approaches and following green chemistry principles. We work in close connection with both international collaborators in academia, large-scale facilities and national and international industrial entities.
